The issue here is accurate diagnosis.
Although photodynamic therapy and more superficial laser techniques may be curative for uniformly superficial basal and squamous cell carcinomas it is likely that biopsy techniques may be subject to sampling error so that recurrences are to be expected and must be monitored for.
Even with deeper resurfacing techniques there may be DNA damage of epithelial cells deep within adnexal/follicular structures.
Recurrences are to be anticipated with any resurfacing techniques. CO2 laser treatments with the collimated hand piece can be highly effective for more superficial, non-melanoma skin cancer, but is still associated with permanent hypopigmentation, particularly in darker phototypes.
